Part 36 - Preparing Black & White Images for web display

July 2007 Magazine

Digital cameras and computer processing make the creation of black & white images easier than with film. The article in the printed magazine explains how to create high quality black & white images. The graphics are shown here so that readers can compare the different images on a PC display.

When preparing black & white images using the method described in Part Thirty Five the result can lack contrast. This article explains a simple way to increase the contrast and add more visual ‘snap’ to the appearance. Below is a rollover showing the Original picture and a version enahnced using the techniques described in the magazine. Move your mouse cursor over the image and watch it change.

(Note that for this to work your web browser must have Javascript enabled. Also, if you are using Internet Explorer depending on your security settings it may ask you if you want to run an ActiveX control - say Yes, otherwise the animation here will not work.)
.

The magazine article compares for different applications of the contrast enhancement technique and the graphic is repeated below. Click on the image to open a larger version in a new window.
