When browsing through pictures on web sites a common fault seen by the author is an image that has a ‘grey’ appearance and which, in extreme cases, looks more like a painting than a photograph. Why does this happen and how can it be avoided ?

One possible cause is a badly set up computer monitor. Check the setup of your monitor using this test chart.

The image below demonstrates the problem. Move your mouse over the image to see the difference between an image with and without deep blacks. The magazine article explains how to recognise and deal with the problem.
